Goddess of the Day

Posted in Blah, Yummy of the Day with tags , , , , , , , on July 9, 2009 by Looks Delicious

Instead of a yummy I am having a Goddess today. In Hinduism, Durga is the mother of the universe and believed to be the power behind the work of creation, preservation, and destruction of the world. She is depicted with 10 arms to represent the ten directions in Hinduism and show that she protects from all directions. She is known as a Triyambake, which means the three eyed Goddess, and the eyes represent desire, action and knowledge. She rides a lion which stands for power, will and determination. In her hands she holds a number of different weapons which were gifted to her from various Gods and each have their own meanings, such as the Sudarshan-Chakra (or beautiful discus), which she spins around her index finger while not touching it, which signifies that the entire world is subservient to her will and is at her command. The fella looking worse for wear is Mahishasur, a demon who had unleashed a reign of terror on earth, heaven and the nether worlds. Upon encountering Durga he did not believe that a woman would be powerful enough to kill him so Durga roared with laughter and caused an earthquake just to show him how powerful she was. Mahishasur changed from buffalo demon to elephant to lion to man, trying to defeat Durga but she slayed him each time using one of her weapons.  His final attack saw him try the buffalo form again and whilst he was half man-half buffalo he became paralyzed by the light emitting from Durgas body and she cut his head down.

Durga is an embodiment of creative feminine force and she exists in a state of self-sufficiency and fierce compassion. She is thought by Hindus to be an aspect of Kali and the mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya, therefore she is thought to the fiercer demon-fighting form of Lord Shivas wife, Goddess Parvati. Hindus believe that goddess Durga protects her devotees from the evils of the world and at the same time removes their miseries. She’d be welcome round my house anytime.

My Dream House

Posted in Blah with tags , , , , , , on July 7, 2009 by Looks Delicious

Technically this is not a house, it is Castillo de Las Coloradas or Torre de Aguila (Eagle Tower), it’s in Lanzarote and it’s my new dream home. It was built in 1742 as a watchtower for the strip of sea between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and it was burned by Pirates looking for slaves but it’s still standing. There is a beautiful belltower on top and sits on it’s own on the edge of the cliff but the best part is that it has a drawbridge so I can just raise it up and keep the monsters out. I just hope I can get wireless in there…..
